My Maytag washer wont spin, this is a complaint that I have heard and fixed countless times over the years.

This how to is for a top load Maytag not spinning only, look for “front load not spinning” for help diagnosing Maytag and Whirlpool front load units.

Here are several of the  common diagnoses

Lid switch assembly broken (thinks the lid is not down)
Out of balance. Lift the lid to reset the out of balance switch.
Belts are worn (check bottom of washer for broken or slipping belt)
Transmission. If your motor is running and belts are in place the transmission is more than likely the culprit. Some Maytag washer have a ten year transmission warranty.

If the motor starts when the lid is down, the lid switch is fine and intact. Moving along you want to ensure the belts are in place, tip the washer back and inspect the belts.

Look for small shaving of the belt and small rubber pieces. If the belts are obviously the problem replace and test the unit. If the belt are in place and seem to be spinning the two pulleys underneath then apply a little pressure to the motor to see if the tension will grab the center pulley better and spin the tub. If the tub starts to move then the belts are worn, there is minimal belt adjustments on these washers its best to replace the belt to resolve the issue.
