Whirlpool makes their control lock very confusing.

Often times people will look on the control panel and the control lock light will go on and they can not figure out how to unlock the control panel.  They will try pressing and holding the cancel button and unplugging the washer or dryer to reset it.  None of these options work.

All you need to do is press and “hold the end of cycle” button for 3 seconds and the control panel will unlock.

This is a quick DIY repair that you can do on your own if the problem should arise.

  3. Replaced main board in my 5 year old Duet Dryer. Turn on when I plugged it in so I unplugged so I could open door to stop. When plugged back it got PF code. Unplugged again then plugged in again and code was gone but Control Locked was on. Turn that off with End Cycle button. Now no LED light were on. Pushed Control On button and Sensing light came on dimly. Held button about three seconds and Control Lock came on. Tried to turn off with End Cycle button but would not turn off. Tried Control on button and after three seconds the Control Lock went off. Now the End Cycle will not turn the Control Lock on or off but the Control On button will. The only thing working is the Control Lock LED and a dim Sensing LED when Control On is held. PLEASE HELP/

    • Bill,

      • I had the same problem. There is a later post that tells you to hold the control lock button down. It worked great!!! I kept looking for the end of cycle button, but my machine doesn’t have one. It took me a while to figure that the there was a button above the control lock light, it doesn’t look like a button. Thanks, I was on the verge of crying, lol.

        • Hi, thanks for taking the time to comment. Yes, on the new style washing machines they used an actual “Control Lock” button. I guess the end of cycle button was to confusing. Glad you got it working again. Good work.

          Matt

      • I pressed and held the “end cycle” button and the control lock button is still lit and beeping =(

  8. I have a 3 month old Whirlpool Duet Steam dryer model #9750. I push power, then press and hold start. It lights up normally, but the dryer doesn’t start. I’ve plugged and unplugged it, made sure the door was shut, and still nothing. The dryer does not have an end of cycle button. Please help!

  11. Whirlpool Duet Model GEW9250PW0

Controls Locked and End of Cycle signal button has no effect when held down for 3 seconds or even longer.

Unplugging the machine did not clear it either.

    Any suggestions?

  12. Bless you for posting this!

  13. I have a Whirlpool duet HT front loader with the “Control Locked” button permanently on. I tried the hold for three seconds option on the cancel button and tried every other variation of holding all buttons with no luck. I disconnected from power for a day and no change. I ordered a new interface control panel and installed it. The new panel has the same light stuck on control locked.

Any ideas on what to try next?

    Thanks!!

    Cliff

    • Cliff, what is the model number of your washing machine? What is the part number that you replaced?

Have you tried holding down the “End Of Cycle” button for 5 seconds?

The only things that cause the locked light to stay on are a bad user interface control board or the button is pressed..

      Matthew

  14. After being powered off for a couple days I went and flipped the breaker back on. I reinstalled the original control panel interface an the control lock light went away. This is strange as I previously tried the whole power off thing several times. I also tried as you suggested. I held every button plus every button while pressing other buttons as well. I hope this stays working now.

My model number is : GHW9400PW0

  16. Worked for me. Thanks a bunch.

  17. I have a Whirlpool Duet washer. The Control Lock light is on. I do not have a “End Of Cycle” button that I can see. I have tried holding down each button for at least 3 seconds. Nothing works. Please advise. Thank You!

    Casual under the automatic cycles
Timed dry under the manual cycles
Air only in the temperature button area.

I have unplugged it for several minutes, checked the lint crap to make sure it is clear as well as the vent to the outside. I cannot seem to get any response at all.

  21. Thanks work perfectly for me. save time and money .

    Thank You

  22. On my Whirlpool Duet front load washer control lock light wont shut off. Also I try hold power button and it doesnt turn on. I tried unpluggin it and reseting the breaker. neither of these help. There is no end of cycle button neither. not sure where to find model or serial numbers.Any advice?

    • Hi, thanks for taking the time to comment.

If your model doesn’t have an End of cycle button, then there is a dedicated control lock button on the panel.

If holding that button down for 5 seconds does not work, the user interface most likely has a short.

      Thanks

  23. This was awesome! Helped me out big time!! Thank you!!

  24. Thank you!!! My dryer is so old I thought it was broke. I wasn’t willing to someone and was thinking I had to buy a new one. Again, thank you so much for sharing!!

  25. I have a Whirlpool Duet dryer that is about 3 years old model #gew9250pw0. I am unable to change any of the settings. I have held the “end of cycle signal” button for more than 15 seconds. It is running and heating, but only on high heat. The signal is on loud. I am unable to change any of these settings. I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

  26. I have a whirlpool duet dryer and the control lock button is stuck on. I can hold down the end of cycle button for 3 + seconds and still it does not unlock. Is there any other way that I can unlock the control panel.

  27. I was just sitting here on my computer when I heard a beaping, followed it and found it to be my duet dryer, the control lock button flashes and beaps, I tried the fix you are saying, holding the end cycle button for 3 seconds and nothing happens. Door open, door closed, I change the cycles and nothing still. I did notice that the delicate cycle light is faintly on and the wrinkle shield light is faintly on. Any suggestions??

    • Hi, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.

It sounds like the user interface board has failed. Try unplugging the unit for 30 minutes sometimes that will fix the issue.

  28. Worked perfectly!!!! fixed in less than 3 secs!!! thanks a bunch…. Does anyone know why the control light was locked in the first place?

    • Hi, thanks for taking the time to comment.

Usually the button gets bumped accidentally. Another thing that causes this is the user interface. When the board goes bad it causes this issue for some reason.

      Matthew

  29. On my model (a newer one) the “Control lock” button was the key, though it was not clear that it was a button at all. There was a touch sensor under the control lock light itself, that unlocked the controls when I held it for three seconds.

  30. I have a whirlpool duet dryer (model ggw9250pwo). Two days ago it was working. Today I washed a load, threw it into the dryer and the dryer will not turn on. I pushed the control on button like always to tart my cycle. Nothing. Tried the end of signal tip and still nothing. I ran a diagnostic test and get 69. Read on another forum this is supposedly a g9 and indicates a faulty door switch. My father-in-law checked all of the electrical components for burns/damages and used a meter. Everything checked out. Now I’ve got 2 loads of wet laundry. Contacted the appliance store where we purchased and they were no help.

    • Hi, thank you for taking the time to comment. If you push the door/light switch in does it click?

There is a small non resettable fuse down on the blower housing. Does that small thin fuse have continuity?

      Thanks

  31. THANK YOU! It worked!

  33. I have a Whirlpool front load duet model. gew9250pw1 that will not run. The lock light is on I tried to reset it by holding the cancel button but that didn’t work. Nothing turns on or lights up! Could this be a interface problem like you have stated on previous messages?

  34. This didn’t work at first but I pulled the front plastic piece and then pushed it back into place and it worked. I guess the button was stuck. thanks.

  35. I tried several times ” hold 3 seconds” nothing works….what can I do? is dual
thank you!!!! its driving me crazy

  36. We have the GEW9250PW0, control locked on, end of cycle for up to 30 seconds does not work, replaced user interface twice thinking the first one was bad, control locked still on. Cleaned control board with air compressor, have tried just about everything. No way to get codes due to nothing working on panel. Any help would be appreciated.

  37. Thank you SO much!! Because of you my daughter wasnt late for school lol…the end of cycle worked 😀

  38. WOW!! “That Was Easy”. You guys should have a big RED BUTTON like Staples on your Website. It took 3 seconds and it worked for me right off the top. You saved me a service call my friends. Thank you so much for the help, it was greatly appreciated.
Blessings, and have a wonderful day, until next time, which could be sooner than I think, haha!!
    Bye for now

  39. Hello, my duet washer stopped working. It was giving an error message. We powered it off and then realized that after unstacking it, we had the water off. We turned it back on but the washer would not work. The engine runs for draine, water does not go in and the only light that is blinking is the locked door signal. I tried to plug and unplug it several times, hold control lock for several seconds, pause and on/off buttons for several seconds and nothing changes. I hear it draining the water sound, even though it is empty but nothing happens. The screen does not work at all, any of the buttons or lights, knob to chose the cycle does not work either. I appreciate any help or advise I can now get. Thank you.

    • Hi, how did you fix your issue as i have the same problem with my washin machine! Is there nay way to fix it?

  46. Have a Duet HT model # GHW9300W4 and the control locked button is on… I have tried unplugging it.. holding the cancel button. flipping off the breaker , there isnt and end cylce button on my machine and nothing seems to work,

  47. Hi Matthew,

I used your reset trick about a year ago and it worked like a charm. Now I have a new issue that I’m hoping you can help identify. I have a Duet f/l, model #GEW9250PW0. Yesterday I dried a tablecloth and noticed it was pretty hot when I took it out of the dryer. I went to dry the next load and the dryer wouldn’t start. I figured it needed to cool down but it still won’t start. It gets as far as the ‘Sensing’ light coming on but doesn’t go any further. The control lock button only lights up when I hold down the ‘End of Cycle’ button. I’m trying to decipher if it’s a door lock issue or a thermostat issue. What do you think?

  48. I have a duet dryer that has power but will not start. There is no series of beeps when I press start. It was doing this but I replaced the thermistor. Now all lights on panel work, door switch makes a click sound but it just sits there. Any ideas?

  49. Hello ..

  52. Hi, I am having similar issue with the control lock. I’ve bee trying to press buttons that were suggested by others but it still does not work. Pls help!!! Here’s my dryer info: model # GGW9250PW2. Thanks.

    • Hi, thank you for taking the time to comment.

You’ve held down the “End of Cycle” button for 5-10 seconds? You’ve also unplugged the washer for 30 minutes?

      Thanks

  53. Model GEW9200LW1 WP Duet Dryer

The dryer wasn’t starting. I would turn it on, push start and it would bump and stop. Occasionally though as I tried different cycles it would start. I searched online and found out how to run the diagnostic test and entered it successfully and got the 88. All lights came on but no code except would get 08 when I pressed start. Got a little carried away and held down the start button for several seconds and now the dryer won’t stop running unless I open the door. Even when nothing is on the display, the dryer will run with the door shut. Any ideas on what to do next? I’m not an electronics guy as far as testing all the different circuits but with 2 separate electrical components and it not stopping, just don’t know next move.

  54. whirlpool duet model wfw9550ww00 began leaking water during an Afresh cycle. Wouldn’t power off. I unplugged it to stop the cycle and quit the draining and leaking onto my floor. Repair an found a puncture in the rubber gasket. 225 later and it is now stuck in “int” from the cycle interruption. The drain has bee. Cleared of water and/or debris. Circuit breaker flipped. It won’t cancel the cycle Automatically restarts at 1:05 and the time ticks away with zero action. If I unplug it again, it’ll default back to 1:05. I tried to count it down again after it hung on 1min for a half hour. Please help! My fridge broke and bought a new one on Monday. Already spent 225 on the rubber gasket. I’m at a loss. We have 3 kids and I do at least a load a day. Thanks in advance!!

    • Hi, thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. Have you tried putting the washer into diagnostics mode? I’m not sure it will go into diagnostics since all the lights need to be off but it’s worth a shot. Let me know what happens when you try?

      Thanks,

      Matt

  55. Whirlpool duet dryer ygew9200lw1 is stuck in Control locked tried holding the end of cycle signal didn’t work, also tried unplugging, holding pause and cancel. Nothing is working. HELP

    • Hi, that’s very odd. Have you left it unplugged for 30 minutes? Do you see the writing where it says “Hold To Lock/Unlock” under the “End Of Cycle” button? Sounds like a faulty user interface if so.

Let me know what you find out.

      Thanks,

      Matt

  56. It worked! Thank you, I thought my washer was a goner…

  57. So that didn’t work for me. I pressed and held the “Control lock” button and nothing happened….. Thoughts?
